about

Instrumental inspired by the novel "Anansi Boys" by Neil Gaiman in which a character or two performs this song as a karaoke number. I programmed the steel drums and drums, dubbed in my acoustic rhythm track and bass tracks, then took things outdoors--the saxophone track was recorded live under the Hennepin Avenue bridge during a noon hour when I worked for a downtown law office. I brought an mp3 player to work, listened to my backing tracks on headphones and played along, capturing the natural ambience of the cathedral-like space under the span--careful listening with headphones might even reveal the sound of a truck or two passing overheard. The bridge (of the song that is), structured as a IV-III-II-I riff with a nod to Prince with the hand claps, opens the song up a little more so than most of the folksy versions you might hear on records from the '50s and '60s. This number, which when I perform it live features a delightfully profane introduction from my favorite saxophonist Eddie Harris, has become what I would call a signature track in my repertoire, and I'm very proud of the arrangement I did. Thank you for checking it out. -Wayne

Well Trained Monkey Minneapolis, Minnesota

Well Trained Monkey is my one person band. My previous approach of multi-tracking saxophones, bass and guitar with electronic elements and drum programming has now been replaced with in-the-moment live takes. It's a mix of island music, funk, jazz, and electronic elements. I've performed live at venues and festivals around the Twin Cities and surrounding areas for 12 years. ... more
